ENGLISH AND FRENCH ANTIQUE TEXTILES

I have been dealing in the field of antique textiles for nearly 25 years, and have regularly exhibited in venues in Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland.

I buy most antique shawls in England, and concentrate mainly on the Norwich, Paisley and Spitalfields manufacturers. All of these shawl producers were famous for their beautiful designs and workmanship. Spitalfields, above all, for their brightly coloured silk long stoles with woven floral ends. These are getting rare, and difficult to find in reasonable condition. I have never had a Spitalfields stole in excellent condition, but they are my personal favorite. They are unmistakable in their style and design, whereas many other shawls are "possibly" Norwich or Paisley.
Sometimes I buy a French shawl, these are usually larger and more flamboyant than their English counterparts, but nevertheless, they have their following.

Further items which I have to offer are European lace trimmings dating from the 17th - 19th century. These are of varying quality, but all are in good condition, and very collectable. Now and again, I also locate Victorian wedding veils, which are beautiful, but sometimes quite delicate.

I carry a limited range of antique and vintage textiles - mostly from France, and these can be used for various projects - either collecting, for making cushions or even for upholstery. Collectors do not mind damaged pieces, if they are rare and beautiful. Especially popular are the French "toiles" from Jouy, Nantes, Rouen or Mulhouse, but I only buy the original pieces from the late 18th or early 19th century.

I have left my greatest love till last, and this is antique costume - early 19th century. I try really hard to locate gowns and accessories from this period, but here again, so much has damage or marks - but they sell…. I find many people who just simply want to own a gown from this era, damaged or not. They even try some restoration themselves, if the damage is too intrusive.

One more thing which I feel I must mention is that antique textiles are very seldom in mint condition. There are always signs of age and use. This is to be expected, and is in many cases desirable. Flaws are part of the character of any antique, but especially textiles, which have often been repeatedly used, worn, washed, and even altered.
