A BEAUTIFUL RICH BLUE SILK SQUARE SPITALFIELDS FLORAL WOVEN SHAWL. ENGLISH ca.1810

This is a delightful blue silk square shawl with floral and leaf border all round. It dates to about 1810. It was manufactured in Spitalfields, London, from whence these lovely shawls got their name.

Spitalfields silk weavers produced a multitude of jewel-like shawls as well as the lovely dress brocades.

This shawl is square and is very typical in design, with stylish border and short fine fringe.

The condition is excellent, with just a few tiny pin prick holes (only seen when held to the light), and very slight loss here and there, of the fine short fringe. These small flaws do not detract in the least. The shawl is fluid and drapes beautifully.

Measurements: 57" square

Price: SOLD
